About Tarangire National Park

Tarangire is a destination where wildlife, ancient trees and seasonal landscapes come together in a distinctive northern Tanzania setting. The park is famous for its impressive elephant population and its spectacular collection of giant baobabs, which create some of the most recognizable scenery on the northern safari circuit.

The Tarangire River gives the park its name and serves as an important water source, especially during the dry season. As surrounding areas become drier, elephants, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeests, giraffes and other animals concentrate around the river and wetlands. This seasonal movement creates rewarding game viewing conditions.

Tarangire also offers exceptional birding opportunities, with more than 550 bird species recorded. Its combination of riverine forests, baobab hills, acacia woodland, open plains and Silale Swamp creates a wide range of habitats for wildlife and birds.

Morning Game Drive

Start your safari early when the landscape is cool and wildlife is active. Explore the river valleys, open plains and woodland while watching elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, antelopes and predators begin their day.

The early hours also offer beautiful natural light for photography and quieter wildlife encounters before the heat of the afternoon.

Elephant Encounters

Tarangire is renowned for its elephant herds. Watch family groups move through the savannah, feed beneath baobabs, cross open plains and gather near water. A slow paced game drive gives you time to observe their social behaviour, communication and interaction with the surrounding landscape.

The Baobab Landscapes

Ancient baobabs rise across Tarangire’s hills and savannahs, giving the park its distinctive character. Their enormous trunks and unusual silhouettes create exceptional scenery throughout the day. At sunrise and sunset, the warm light transforms the baobab covered landscape into an outstanding setting for photography.

Silale Swamp

Explore the Silale Swamp and surrounding grasslands, an important wildlife area within Tarangire. During dry periods, water and vegetation attract elephants, buffaloes, birds and other wildlife. The swamp also provides a different landscape from the river valleys and open savannah, giving your safari greater variety.

Wildlife & Predator Encounters

Tarangire supports lions, leopards, cheetahs and hyenas alongside large populations of herbivores. The concentration of prey around water sources during dry periods creates opportunities to observe natural predator activity.
Your guide follows fresh tracks, animal behaviour and recent sightings to select promising areas for the day’s game drive.

Sunset in Tarangire

As the afternoon fades, the park takes on warm golden tones. Baobabs become striking silhouettes while elephants and other animals continue moving across the plains.
A late afternoon drive offers an ideal combination of wildlife viewing, landscape photography and peaceful moments in the African bush.
